The Strada di grande comunicazione Firenze-Pisa-Livorno , abbreviated to FI-PI-LI (FIrenze – PIsa – LIvorno) is a 4-lane road (2 + 2) with separate carriageways that since the 90s connects Florence with Pisa and Livorno . This motorway is next to the Autostrada A11 (Autostrada Firenze-Mare) the second road connection between the cities of Florence and Pisa .
The FI-PI-LI is a superstrada ( flow road that does not meet the standards for a motorway , but with separate carriageways) and has a relatively narrow and winding route compared to the parallel motorway (autostrada) A11. This road starts at Florence / Scandicci, crosses the A1 , passes Empoli and Pontedera and splits at Cascina into a branch to Pisa and a branch to Livorno.
Hopper Engineering and Consultancy was responsible for the detailed design of a long tunnel (cut and cover) due to the infrastructure upgrade. The detailed design was made in collaboration with Ingegneri Associati srl.
