The National Palace of Sintra is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the most important and emblematic in Portugal. The site is located in the city of Sintra, 30 km west of Lisbon, the Portuguese capital. The first reference to the palace was made by a tenth-century Arab geographer. Though the years, every king and queen of Portugal, spent some time in residence at the National Palace leaving behind their own respective marks.
The complex was modelled with extreme attention to the details. The buildings are composed by mainly rubblestone masonry. This material was largely calibrated before being applied. A detailed non-linear dynamic seismic assessment of the complex was performed by means of a non-linear time-history analysis.
This work was presented at the third EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING & SEISMOLOGY (3ECEES) held in Bucharest, Romania, in September 2022.
